MICRO INCISION CATARACT SURGERY

Micro incision cataract surgery, also known as MICS, it is a sophisticated cataract surgery, designed with a high degree of surgical innovation. It involves performance of cataract surgery, via an incision/ cut smaller than 1.8 mm and insertion of specialised intraocular lens into the eye.

Cataract surgeries have been improvised over the ages, to improve the surgical outcomes.

The standard surgery performed nowadays is called Phacoemulsification, in which surgery is performed via an incision/cut of approximately 3 mm in size.

But with the continual research and development of micro instruments, the procedure of MICS was introduced and has been the premium surgery of choice ever since. It has revolutionized the entire surgical management of cataract. It has rendered the surgery safer, speedier and more accurate.

ADVANTAGES OF MICS OVER THE OTHER STANDARD CATARACT PROCEDURE

1. Minimal surgical invasion and trauma

2. Lesser surgically induced astigmatism, i.e, lesser change in the original shape of the eye, and hence, better visual outcomes

3. Lesser use of ultrasound or phaco energy during the surgery and hence, safer for the eye structures

4. Quicker and near immediate postoperative recovery

5. Lesser postoperative checks at the hospital

Since this surgery requires a better training, special instruments and use of premium lenses, the cost of the surgery is more than the other conventional procedures.
